Detail
The main difference between a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) and an induction motor is in the rotor. The rotor of PMSM mainly contains permanent magnet, rotor core, rotor shaft and bearings. Some important features and structural forms of the rotor of permanent-magnet synchronous motor are as follows:
Structural features of rotor
The main difference between the permanent magnet synchronous motor and the ordinary induction motor is rotor fitted with permanent magnet poles. These poles are made in various forms, including the common ones being surface protruding, surface embedded and internally embedded.
Interior magnet PMSM
The permanent magnet is arranged inside of the rotor. It is a conventional structure.
Surface mounted PMSM
The permanent magnet is arranged on the rotor surface.
This design utilizes the principle of minimum magnetoresistance so that the permanent magnet rotor follows the rotating magnetic field generated by the stator.
Inset magnet PMSM
It has magnets inserted into slots stamped in the laminations of the rotor. It is used in the large motor.
Air gap
It is a non-magnetic part of a magnetic circuit. It is usually connected magnetically in series with the rest of the circuit, so that a substantial part of the magnetic flux (or magnetic field) flows through the gap.
Depending on application, air gap may be filled with a non-magnetic material such as gas, water, vacuum, plastic, wood etc. and not necessarily just with air.
Applications
Permanent magnet synchronous motors have gradually replaced AC induction motors in many applications due to their high power and high efficiency. They are widely used in electric vehicles, high-speed trains and other fields.
